Perhaps you've recently purchased a home with some land and you'd like to transform it with edible landscaping and/or set side a portion to be income-producing! Maybe you just want to get rid of your suburban front yard grass and replace it with a food forest! I'd love to help you plan out your resilient future via a permaculture design that will allow you to get to work living your dream.
I have experience designing both for small, urban lots as well as for rural farms with acreage. Designs can range anywhere from simple and small to large and complex. As such, the fee for this service varies depending upon the individual project. I'd be happy to provide you with an estimate after conducting an initial consult ($75/hr; generally takes 1-2 hours). Simply reach out via the form below and I'll be in touch within 1-2 business days.
Ready to change your landscape or start a garden but unsure where to start? Perhaps you're in the thick of the growing season and have a million questions! A garden/ homestead consultation will allow you ask questions and develop a plan. You may choose to have a one-time consult, or may choose to have me out several times in a season to help you along in your gardening, or yard transformation efforts. If you're local to SW Ohio, these sessions can happen in-person, but if you're outside of my local range, these happen virtually. I can even accompany you to a local nursery to pick out plants or stop by mid-season for questions about pests or plant placement. I specialize in regenerative garden design, edible landscaping, and homestead design based on permaculture principles. Soil testing is available as well.
Additionally, I can provide consultations on other "homesteading" matters such as keeping chickens for meat and eggs, etc. I can initially help determine if your space would be suitable for a flock of chickens and help you with any and all steps in between, in bringing that idea to life! Simply let me know what your interests are and I'll let you know if it's a topic I can provide consultation for.
This service is $75/hour.
If you're desiring to change your landscape or yard, project-by-project, my pre-made garden plans (comprised of my most popular designs) are a great place to start. These thoughtful garden designs come with a charming, clear visual design showing you where each item is planted and each one comes complete with shopping + materials lists, planting dates, step-by-step installation instructions as well as plant-care instructions. Choose from a paper-free, downloadable version or a physical copy (physical offerings will increase throughout 2024). I take the guesswork out of gardening + homesteading, so you can enjoy the process!

"Working with Lauren has been an absolute dream. We were so inspired by her social media posts about what she was doing here in Ohio, and after taking a tour of her land - we knew we had to have her design something for our one acre! She was incredibly knowledgeable throughout the entire process, and soon had us excited about things like "nitrogen fixers" and dynamic accumulators" too! Our completed design was unique, thoughtful, aesthetically beautiful, and perfect for our needs. It was clear that she had really considered our family, lifestyle and the things we talked about during our consultation. Her obvious passion for her work is infectious, and she has equipped us with the confidence to move forward with our plans with so many amazing resources. We are forever grateful to her for helping us create something we didn't even know was possible, and can't wait to work with her again on future projects!" (Custom Homestead Design Client)
"Lauren, you 'heard' every single idea I had and incorporated those and so many more elements beyond my imagination! The process from our initial consultation to sending you inspiration photos to the final reveal call was very easy. AND your delightful personality and gift of explanation has been so encouraging." "I always wanted to grow my own veggies. When I used to live in the apartments, I had a pot for tomatoes and peppers. Some years I did grow them and later I stopped since there was no so much yield from them. When I moved to a house with big backyard, I was excited to grow veggies in a raised bed, but was not sure where to start. Then I came across Lauren’s profile, where she transformed her front yard and backyard into a farm which was very impressive, so I connected with her. In 2022, she guided me to how to make raised bed and what vegetables can be grown together. This year, she created a plan for summer spring and fall for vegetable that I wanted to grow. She has put together this plan very well, with pictures and all the information needed to grow specified vegetables. In addition to that she also added information regrading other vegetables or fruits or herbs that you can grow. She has been a really great guide for me."

"If you are thinking about adding native landscaping and gardening to your home, Lauren is the first ray of sunshine needed to grow those plans! She's a delight to work with and a wealth of knowledge! She will carefully asses your land and goals and provide you a detailed plan packed to the fullest potential!"

"Lauren, just wanted to thank you for the great side yard food forest and native woodland garden plan. From our first meeting you listened to my wish to include as many native plants into my garden to support the pollinators and other wildlife. I couldn’t be happier, the dwarf fruit trees, nuts, edible plants and shrubs are perfect. The plant shopping list, planting information and especially the step-by-step installation and execution instructions are exactly what I needed to tackle this project. Can’t wait to get started (if the snow ever melts). Sue"

"Lauren did an incredible job envisioning a kitchen garden for us. Our space was overgrown and neglected when we moved in, but her carefully tailored plans have set us on a course to revive our acreage with self-sufficiency and sustainability in mind. She thoughtfully incorporated projects for all skill levels and all ages—our toddler can’t wait to make his beanpole tent!"

Clients interested in having a design created for their space will be given a quote based on the specifics of their situation (size, goals, scope, etc.). Designs and their accompanying documents (shopping lists for vegetation + materials and step-by-step installation instructions) can take anywhere from a couple of hours to weeks to complete and pricing is estimated based on a $75/hour design rate. Reach out for a design consultation and I'll be able to provide you with your quote.
At this time, I only offer permaculture design and consult services, however, I specialize in creating designs and plans for DIY clients and as such, each of my designs (custom and "ready-to-go") come with shopping lists for vegetation and materials as well as step-by-step installation instructions; telling you exactly what's needed and what to do to bring your design to life. Additionally, I'm available for consultation throughout the installation and maintenance phases and can walk you through all the steps to take.
Installing yourself is a great way to create the landscape of your dreams at a fraction of the cost, but I'm also happy to provide referrals to installers local to your region, should I have a relationship with one near you!
Permaculture (contraction of permanent and culture) is a term that was first coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970's. In a nutshell, permaculture is the intentional, thoughtful design and maintenance of plant and animal systems that work in concert with, and mimic nature's natural resilience and bounty. Permaculture design takes all of the variables of the environment into consideration when planning out a fitting future for a piece of property. Things like topography, water flow, wind, pollution (noise, sound, light, toxins, etc.), wildlife, soil condition and composition, etc. are taken into consideration when determining the proper placement for animal and/or plant systems .
Permaculture works to create a landscape that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but one that operates optimally, in concert with the local ecology AND works to meet your needs as the steward(s) of your property.
Permaculture design can be as comprehensive as your needs dictate and the design itself can include the following elements (this is by no means a exhaustive list):
Absolutely! The only thing truly needed to implement a design yourself is time, energy, and effort. Your individual/family/community variables will be factored in when creating the design to ensure that you are able to implement it yourself, in a cost effective and time efficient manner. Additionally, each of my designs (custom and "ready-to-go") come with step-by-step installation instructions to tell you exactly what to do to bring your design to life. I'm available for consultations throughout your installation process to ensure all is going according to plan and to help you along the way, should you run into issues or have questions. You can transform your yard/ property yourself and I would love nothing more than to help you reach your goals!
